Gothic Revival
The Gothic Revival style (1840-1890) had strong connections to religion and nature. It is a revival style based on English and French architecture from the 12th- 15th centuries. It can be found in churches and homes. The two American architects mainly responsible for popularizing the style were Alexander Jackson Davis and Andrew Jackson Downing. The Gothic Revival style was popularized through house pattern books such as architect Andrew Jackson Downing’s Cottage Residences , published in 1842. The Gothic Revival was the first of the “picturesque styles” which symbolized a return to romance and chivalry.--Amy Lytle
