Story
Story is everything we tell ourselves about an experience, a situation, or a person.
Most of us don't identify it in that way, though.
We tend to call it "the truth."
Rather than seeing life as a multitude of random events, viewing it as a story shapes our life in a way that can be powerful.
Hearing other people share their stories, even if it is counter to what we think of as "true," helps us realize that their story helps them make meaning of their experience.
When they first hear about your perspective or insight, instead of thanking you, they are likely to react by rejecting it. That doesn't solve anything.
If we are looking through the lens of a shared story, however, we may be able to connect. "Yes, that was true. What would need to happen to make this true, too?" And with that, the conversation changes. Now we can forge a path forward, together.
We can weave a story, spin a tale.
"What would this look like if it were easy?"
This supposes the possibility of better situations and new ways.
We can all learn to ask questions of other storytellers:
"Are people in your story able to do this better or differently?"
"What does that look like?"
