Stick Style Architecture
Popular about 1860 - 1900
Stick Style architecture was popular during the Victorian Era. Decorative wood trim, called stick work, is applied to the outside of a house to make it Stick Style. The exterior mirrors the “bones” of the building–the cross braces and vertical and horizontal wood framing--without actually supporting the internal construction.
Stick Style Identifying features:
- Stick Work - also called half-timbering
- Usually made with wood (this makes it different than Tudor Revival houses)
- Steep roofs
- Broad eaves
- Deep verandahs
- Tall proportions
